This is not a sponsored post. I purchased the products with my own money and would like to review them for anyone who might be interested.
I first heard of Overtone a few months ago when I saw an ad on facebook. I was instantly intrigued. Hair conditioner that actually colors your hair at the same time? Sign me up! It almost seemed too good to be true, but I wanted to find out.
I went to their website to check out the different selections they offer. They have a variety of colors to choose from, and each color comes in Pastel, Vibrant, or Extreme. Pastel obviously being the lightest shade, Extreme the brightest, and Vibrant somewhere in the middle. You can then choose if you want to get your choice of color in the Deep Treatment, the Daily Conditioner, or both. The Deep Treatment is recommended if you want to deposit color into your hair. The Daily Conditioner is used after you’ve already got color in your hair and want to help keep it from fading.
The makers of Overtone say that the colors show up on medium brown to lighter hair, so you don’t even need to bleach your hair first. Of course the lighter your hair is to begin with, the better the color will show up. If you have dark blonde to brown hair, the Extreme would probably be best for you. My natural color is dark blonde, but I currently have my hair highlighted, which makes it about a medium blonde. I ended up choosing the Vibrant for myself.
I was pleased to see that they offer sample sizes so you can try out different colors before committing to a full bottle. However, a sample size will not be enough to color your whole head, if that’s what you’re going for. They’re more for streaks and test strands. That’s what I decided to do for now. I purchased a sample of the Vibrant Pink, Vibrant Purple, and Vibrant Teal in the Deep Treatment. I opted not to get the Daily Conditioners because they are more for if you color your whole head.
Overtone conditioners can be used on wet or dry hair. I decided to use them on dry hair. I pinned some of my hair back with crocodile clips, grabbed some sections of hair, and I applied the color. I have always gone to the salon to get my hair done, so I was extremely scared to do this. I thought for sure I would mess up my hair somehow. It ended up being really easy. I didn’t use gloves so my fingers were stained a little, but all the color came off my hands after a few washes.
I kept the conditioner on my hair for 15 minutes, then I rinsed it out and dried my hair. I was pretty pleased with how it turned out, although I wished I had put a few more streaks in, but I wanted to start out slow for now. On my shade of hair, the colors turned out mostly pastel. I might try out the extreme next time. I noticed that out of the three colors, the pink showed up the best on my hair. Despite being the darkest, the purple seemed to show up the least. I did wash my hair today, and like ordinary dyes, the colors did fade a little. I thought maybe the colors would wash out completely, but they’re still there, which is good. I also still have a lot of the conditioner left, so I can continue to put more color in my hair.
Overall, I’m pretty pleased with this product. Although the colors showed up lighter than I expected on my hair, it still turned out decent. It’s also much cheaper than going to the salon.
