I got back from Florida yesterday morning, but I was too tired to write out a post because I was exhausted and didn’t get that much sleep while I was away. I slept great last night, now that I’m back home in my own bed.
I went with my mom and aunt, and my grandma lives there so we stayed with her. We were in Daytona Beach and surrounding areas such as Ormond Beach, New Smyrna, Port Orange, and Ponce Inlet. We flew out of Maryland on Monday morning and got to Florida in the afternoon. It started pouring down raining after we left the airport, but the rain eventually subsided. We went to Ponce Inlet to check out the Ponce de Leon lighthouse. Originally I wanted to go up in the lighthouse and take some photos out of the windows, but since it was wet and cloudy and I was tired, I decided not to do that.
I also took the photo below while we were in Ponce Inlet, which I thought turned out pretty.
Monday evening we went to eat at a place called D.B. Pickles. I had seen and heard of it before when I was in Florida, but this was my first time going there. They have a pickle bar, which is pretty unique. It has different types of pickles, plus pasta and bean salads that use pickle flavoring. I had never had beans that were flavored with pickle juice before, and I have to say it was interesting. It wasn’t bad, just a bit sour. The pickled pasta salads were really good though. I ended up ordering The Classico sandwich as my meal, which wasn’t bad. It comes with ham, salami, pepperoni, provolone, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, banana peppers, and a vinaigrette dressing. It was decent for a sandwich, but there was nothing about it that made it stand out from any other sandwich at any other place. If I’m in town again, I would like to try something else on their menu.
Tuesday evening we went to eat at a place called Lenny’s. It’s a NY style pizza place, and they sell huge 24″ pizza’s. They all looked really good. My family all wanted a steak and cheese though, so that’s what they ordered. I ordered a slice of the Hawaiian style pizza, which I thought tasted pretty good. I also ate half of my mom’s steak and cheese. The steak had great flavor, and they weren’t skimpy on the cheese either, which I love. We all thought the rolls were toasted way too much though.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday I was dropped off at the beach because that was all I really cared about. I love water in general, which is no surprise since my zodiac element is water, but I especially love the ocean. It’s such a beautiful and powerful part of nature. Since I’m very pale, I need to make sure my skin is protected when I’m out in the sun. Otherwise I will get terribly and painfully burned and look as red as a lobster. I bought SPF 70 sunblock which worked well since I barely burned at all. I made sure I reapplied it every hour and a half to two hours. Of course my family was giving me grief about it because they think I’m too pale and need a tan. They kept saying “You should only wear SPF 30 so you can get some sun. You need a tan.” That was really getting on my nerves! No, I do not need a tan. It’s terrible for your skin, and I want to make sure my skin is well taken care of. Plus, I would be bright pink before any type of tan showed up anyway. I also have no desire to go through the burning and the itching. I’ve had horrible sunburns when I was younger, and they’re not fun at all.
The only issue with using sunblock is that I apparently have some sort of allergy to it. At least I think that was the cause. I never had a problem before, but after going to the beach the first day and applying sunblock, my eyes began to sting badly. I encountered this every day I was at the beach. I know I didn’t get any in my eyes because I was being careful not to and was not rubbing my eyes. I could barely open my eyes at times, and by the time I left Florida both of my eyes were very swollen. The swelling has gone down now that I’m home though.
The last day I was at the beach, a guy hit on me. He asked if I lived there or if I was on vacation. He told me he recently moved to Florida from Michigan. He was not bad looking at all, but I think he may have been around 41. He never actually told me his age, but he said that he also looks younger than he is, and I noticed he had a tattoo with the year 1976 on it. I’m generally not interested in older guys (especially a 12 year age difference) but he really only looked to be around 34-35. He was nice, but I was my normal awkward self. I’m absolutely terrible when it comes to meeting new people. I get really anxious and sort of shut down, not saying too much. Before he left the beach, he shook my hand and said it was really nice meeting me. Then he said it was too bad I was getting ready to fly home because he said he would have liked to have taken me out to lunch. I was actually surprised I got hit on at all since I had no makeup on, my hair was a mess, and my eyes were swollen.
One of the other things I love about Florida, other than the beach and palm trees, is the Chameleons. I just think they’re adorable. I wish I could pick one up, but those little suckers are fast.
Thursday evening, our last night there, we went to eat at a place called Hidden Treasure in Port Orange. I thought the Tiki decorations were cute, and it was by the water. Our hostess was really rude though. She got an attitude when we asked if we could sit at a table near the water. Our waitress was friendly though. They had a lot of different seafood dishes to choose from, so it was hard to choose what to order. I ended up going with the shrimp tacos, which came with their specialty house chips. I thought it was delicious. I loved the creamy sauce that was on the tacos, and the house chips had delicious seasoning on them.
While we were there, a quick rain shower came through. Then a beautiful double rainbow lit up over the water. I was so excited because I haven’t gotten to see a rainbow in a long time.
After we left there, we stopped at a Krispy Kreme for dessert. I’ve only had the store bought kind before, but I had never been to an actual shop. I got two glazed donuts with chocolate icing and sprinkles. They weren’t bad, but they were quite sweet. Here in Maryland where I live, we have a local place called Krumpe’s, which is pretty popular. I have to say that Krispy Kreme does not hold a candle to Krumpe’s though.
I was happy I got to snap some pretty Florida sunset pictures before I left. I’m a huge sunset lover, so I was hoping I would be able to see and capture at least one before I left.
Flying makes me really anxious, but I do love the view. A two hour flight definitely beats a 15 hour drive.
Overall, there were good things and bad about the trip. The good was that I got to go up in the clouds again, go to the beach, see the pretty palm trees, go out to eat, and just generally be in Florida again because it almost feels like a second home to me (even though I rarely get to go). The bad was being away from my cats, my anxiety over flying (even if I love the view), my family (my grandma, especially) driving me nuts, and my burning and swollen eyes. I don’t think I could ever leave Maryland because it’s home and I like it here, but I wish I would hit the jackpot so I could have a second home in Florida.
(I also posted a couple of other photos on my instagram account, and I’m still in the process of adding some more.)
