Five Faves on Friday #8: Essential Oils

Some people seem to think that roll-on essential oils are like perfumes. That is not the case. In fact, I really only smell the oils for a very short time after applying them, and then I can’t smell them anymore. They actually work by penetrating your skin. You apply them to pulse points, such as your wrist, temples, neck, and even the bottoms of your feet. Since pure essential oils are really strong and are not supposed to be put on your skin, they are diluted with a carrier oil (such as coconut oil), which you can rub on your skin. Your body then absorbs the natural oils which can have physical and mental benefits.

There are the skeptics who think that essential oils are pointless, but I personally like them and think they have benefited me by using them. Of course, they’re not a miracle cure by any means, but I think they can be helpful to an extent. Below are five of my favorite blends I like to use, all purchased from one of my favorite Etsy shops, Mythic Mist.

Tum-Ease Blend
This blend is made up of Ginger, Peppermint, and Orange.

This is my favorite essential oil blend, and the one I go through the most. I have a lot of stomach issues, and I do think this helps with it. I also always rub some of this on my stomach before I go to sleep if I’ve been drinking alcohol. I noticed since I started doing that, the amount of times my stomach is upset the next day has decreased.

Sleep Blend
This blend is made up of Lavender, Chamomile, Vetiver, and Clary Sage.

This is the perfect relaxation blend to rub on when you’re ready to go to sleep. It helps put your body into a relaxed state so you can fall asleep quicker. Keep in mind, this is natural oils and not a pharmaceutical, so it’s not going to make you drowsy or knock you out. As I stated, it’s meant to be calming so you can sleep easier. I also really like the smell of this one.

Lavender Blend
This blend is made up of just lavender, as the name states.

I’m a huge lavender lover. I absolutely love the smell, and lavender oil is great because of its many mental and physical healing properties. It can be used to help heal scrapes and other skin irritations, and it’s also a very calming oil which can help ease anxiety or help you fall asleep quicker.

Uplifting Blend
This blend is made up of Lemon, Orange, and Grapefruit.

I love to use this blend as I’m ready to start my day. The orange is especially refreshing, and it helps get me into a focused mindset that I need for the work day. I do feel like I get a slight energy and mood boost when I use this.

Cold & Flu Blend
This blend is made up of Clove, Lemon, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, and Cinnamon.

I use this blend to help boost my immune system. I’m not sure yet if it helps you get over illness any faster as I have not been sick in two years. (I still can’t believe it! I’ve never gone this long without getting sick). I only recently got this blend a few months ago, so my immune system was already doing pretty well, but I figured an added boost wouldn’t hurt. I also really love the cinnamon smell that this one has.

    1. They also have essential oil inhalers as well. The body absorbs the oils from particles released when you breathe it in through your nose. I took my anti-anxiety and calming inhalers on my flight with me over the summer. I was still anxious, but I didn’t have a panic attack like I did the last time I flew.

  1. I’m a huge believer of essential oils! Lavender is amazing for falling asleep, and we have an anti-stress blend our neighbor gave to us and it works WONDERS. I also try to use essentials oils in the classroom (I teach 1st graders) and it absolutely calms them down. I love how these are in little portable containers!

  2. My sister is really into essential oils, she’s been telling me about them for years. She was recently diagnosed with alopecia. The treatment and medication her doctor prescribed was too expensive. So she looked up essential oils and made up her own blend for her hair. I suffer with a lot of muscle pain so I use lavender oil in my baths.
