My Thoughts on the Charmed Reboot

I grew up watching the original Charmed back in the 90’s and early 2000’s. It was one of my favorite shows, and I knew from the moment a reboot was announced that it would never be as good as the original. In fact, I had no plans to even watch it. I saw the trailer and was not impressed, but then something happened. Curiosity got the better of me. I was curious to find out what would be different in the reboot, what would be the same or similar, and find out exactly how bad the reboot really was.

I also felt kind of bad for the cast members having to see all the hate the show was getting before it even aired. You could say that they had to know what they were signing up for, but I still felt a little bad for them. Of course everyone has a right to their opinion.

When a movie gets a remake or reboot, people do have some negative thoughts about it, but it doesn’t seem to be to the extent of a TV show getting a reboot like this. Granted, it has only been 12 years since the original Charmed ended. Usually movie remakes are at least twenty years after the original.

I figured I needed to at least watch the first two episodes of the Charmed reboot before I could really form an opinion and dismiss the show. These are my thoughts based off of the first two episodes. My opinion is subject to change as the show goes on.

I’ll start with the cast and characters because that’s really the first thing I noticed. I was highly skeptical about the casting for this show because it just seemed off. For starters, Harry the Whitelighter (played by Rupert Evans) is British and a little wonky, so I thought of him as a really lame generic version of Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In the second episode, they make you question whether he’s actually good or evil, which I thought was an interesting take on his character. I’m still not entirely sure what to think of him yet though.

The three sisters are Macy (Madeleine Mantock), Mel (Melonie Diaz), and Maggie (Sarah Jeffery). I already knew of and liked Melonie Diaz, so I was interested in seeing her in this. I had never heard of the other two actresses prior to this, but they all seem to be pretty decent in their roles. They really don’t have the same chemistry as the original cast did though. I do think Melonie and Sarah can pass for sisters and I like their scenes together, but Madeleine seems so out of place in this that it really does bug me at times. It’s nothing against the actress in general, but she doesn’t fit that well. She’s a lot taller than the other two, and she also looks so much older. She does play the oldest sister, but she’s actually second oldest of the three actresses at 28 years old. Melonie is the oldest, being 34, and Sarah is the youngest at 22.

I’m actually really liking Sarah Jeffery in this. She’s so adorable, and if this reboot doesn’t last very long, I can totally see her going places. Her character, Maggie, definitely has some similarities to Phoebe in the original. The other two sisters, Macy and Mel, tend to butt heads quite a bit. Their relationship dynamic slightly reminds me of the relationship Piper and Paige had throughout season four of the original.

I will get into my thoughts on the episodes now. The first episode was really not very good at all. The CGI effects were pretty terrible. I think Hollywood just needs to go back to practical effects (unless they have a huge budget that allows for decent CGI) because this garbage CGI makes effects look so much worse than they were twenty years ago. The demon in the first episode was so bad and ridiculous looking that I laughed out loud. I almost didn’t watch the second episode because of that alone.

We find out what the girls powers are in the first episode. Macy, being the oldest, has telekinesis. Mel, the middle sister, can freeze time. Those two are just like the original series. However, instead of premonitions, Maggie can read minds. I’m curious to see how that will go hand in hand with demon fighting because the girls really haven’t used their powers a whole lot yet.

Another similarity and difference both in this reboot is that one of the sisters, Mel, is a lesbian. The similarity is that she’s dating a police detective, kind of like how Prue was dating Andy in the original. We got to see more of their relationship in episode two, so I’m interested in seeing how that plays out.

I found the second episode to be a lot better than the first. The pacing was a bit better, and the CGI in this episode was not as bad. It built up suspense by having the sisters question who they could really trust. It was like we the viewers were right there with them because we didn’t know who was good or evil either, so it kept us guessing. This episode ended on a cliffhanger, so now I’m intrigued to see what happens next.

What are your thoughts on the Charmed reboot so far? I would love to read your thoughts about it.

  1. I’ve actually never watched Charmed before but this has inspired me to watch the old series, especially with Halloween round the corner! It’s a shame about the reboot though, I always find that reboots are never as good x

    1. I think next episode is a Halloween one, so I’m looking forward to it. It’s definitely the type of show you watch if nothing else is on. I’m not super invested in it, but I’m interested to see if it gets better or worse.

  2. I only watched the original Charmed here and there when it played on TV. I was a little interested in this reboot but, have yet to watch it. Did you see they are also making (or have already made) a reboot to Sabrina?! It looks really interesting.

Great review, Britney! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the rest of the series. 🙂

  4. I think I remember watching the original series but it’s been so long that I hardly remember any of it at all. And it seems like they’re trying to remake everything now a days idk if I find that annoying or not lol.
I personally wouldn’t watch the reboot, I just don’t think I’d be into it as much.
