Cool Halloween Finds

264

I am quite the homebody, so you rarely find me going to stores. I much prefer online shopping in the comfort of my own home. However, I got the urge to stop by Target on my way home yesterday just to see what Halloween stuff they had out. I ended up getting a Boo throw pillow for the couch and a Happy Halloween sign for on the wall. I also got a gray faux fur throw for my bed (although not exactly Halloween related, but I’ll include it at the end of the post). There were quite a few other things I wanted but just didn’t have the money to spend at the moment. Here are some of the cool things I came across while I was there.

Review: Hey Honey, A Brand I Love

195

I’m a huge fan of Hey Honey! Basically everything of theirs that I’ve tried so far I have loved. I definitely want to try some more of their products in the future. The only issue is that their products are kind of pricey, but you’re actually paying for quality. Here are some of my thoughts on the products I’ve tried so far.

Hands On: Honey and Propolis Hand Cream
I absolutely swear by this hand lotion! Ever since I first tried it, I don’t even use anything else. I was suffering from dry hands during the Winter. My skin was cracking leaving little painful cuts on my hands, and I also had these really rough patches of skin on my knuckles. I could tell a difference from the first time I used this, but within a few days my dry skin was completely cleared up! This lotion also smells like honeysuckles, which I absolutely love.

Walk the Walk: Propolis Foot Cream
I loved the hand cream so much that I thought I would try this foot cream as well. Unfortunately, I do not like this as much as the hand cream. That’s not to say it’s a bad product though. I could tell my feet were softer after using this, but it didn’t clear up the rough skin on my heel as much as I was hoping it would. Of course it’s probably hard for any product to clear that up completely since we’re always wearing shoes and walking on our feet. I love the smell of this cream as well (though I do think the hand cream smells better). This one smells like mint mixed with honey.

24Seven: Honey Day & Night Cream
This is one of my top two favorite moisturizers. It has anti-aging properties, and it’s good for wearing under makeup or at night before you go to bed. With this, a little really does go a long way. I only need a pea-sized amount to cover my whole face, and my face feels so soft, like silk, afterwards!

Take It Off: Exfoliating Honey Peel Off Mask
This isn’t my favorite Hey Honey mask or even one of my favorite face masks in general, but I do still like it. Like the other products, this too has a nice smell. I also love peel-off masks because they’re fun to peel off. Unlike charcoal masks, this doesn’t hurt at all to peel off. I also like that it doesn’t seem to dry my skin out. I don’t notice a huge difference in my skin when I use this though. I like to use this one to exfoliate and prep my skin before putting on another hydrating mask afterwards.

Uncover: Detoxifying Mud Mask
This is one of my favorite face masks I’ve ever used, and definitely my most favorite mud mask. I’ve never been particularly keen on mud masks because they always seem to dry out my skin. Not this one. I was so absolutely amazed at how soft and hydrated my skin felt using this. In fact, I don’t think my skin has ever felt so soft after using a face mask as it does when I use this product. I also love the gritty texture of the mask as well as the smell. Keep in mind, the smell of this mask isn’t for everyone and I can see how some might not like it. It has a very earthy scent to it, similar to dirt/mud. (Well duh, it is a mud mask). I personally like that though, since I love nature in general.

Good Morning: Honey Silk Facial Serum
This is a great serum to put on your face when you’re getting ready to head out for the day. It works as a moisturizer and primer both. Makeup seems to apply pretty well on top of it. I really like the silky texture this has, and it leaves my skin feeling silky as well. Just be careful to only use a little bit. (Again, a little bit goes a long way). If you use too much, you might find your skin is a little sticky.

After writing this post, I discovered that Ipsy is sending me the Hey Honey Propolis Cream Concealer in my glam bag this month, so I am excited to try yet another Hey Honey product. I’ll give my thoughts on that one in my October Glam Bag post coming later this month.

Ideas For Throwing a Spooktacular Halloween Party

If I had the means and the money, I would love to throw a killer Halloween party. Of course you don’t have to be rich to throw an awesome party. However, with my birthday falling just a couple weeks after Halloween, I usually have a party then instead. Plus, my friend goes crazy with decorating her house, so she’s usually the one having a Halloween get-together. Still, I thought it would be fun to fantasize about all the things I would love to have at a Halloween bash, and it might even give you some ideas if you decide to throw one of your own.

Invitations
Whether you choose to mail your invites, or send out your invites online (my preferred method), you can find cute and creative ways to do so. I’m absolutely loving these Costumes & Cocktails invites from Zazzle, as well as these Vampire-esque invites from Evite.

You can find these here and here.

October: A Time For Change

237

I flipped my calendar over to October (to display this beautifully crafted pumpkin soup recipe), and honestly this is the most exciting calendar flip of the year. Yes, I am one of those people who is ecstatic about Fall and Halloween. (I’ve got quite a few Halloween themed posts planned for this month, so get ready.) Granted, I don’t go all out and wear multiple costumes or go crazy with decorating my house like a friend of mine does. (There’s going to be a post solely dedicated to her house later this month, once all the decorating is complete. Believe me, it’s a sight to see.) I probably would do those things if I had more time and money on my hands though. For me, Fall and Halloween is just a very nostalgic time. There’s a sort of comfort that comes with it, since many of my favorite childhood memories were during this time of year. I also just enjoy the simplistic aspect of it. That certain smell in the air, the chilly wind, and watching horror movies while finally being able to bundle up in blankets after being hot all summer. The Halloween candy is nice too, even if I don’t get to go trick or treating anymore.

October is also a great time for making changes, since it’s such a transitional time of year. I always get the urge around this time to do something different or make some kind of change. One of those changes is that I finally put up a new theme, and of course it’s Halloween themed. There are still some tweaks I might make, but overall I’m happy with how it turned out. Along with the new theme, comes a new URL. This blog is now located at surrealistique.com instead of the .wordpress.com domain. I never felt like having a domain name was super important. You can still have an audience and a fantastic blog without one. I just sort of look at it as an added bonus and an additional step in moving my blog forward, which I’ve really been having fun building and growing.

Products You Need for Softer and Smoother Hair

218

Who else suffers with dry, frizzy, and damaged hair? I know you’re out there. Unfortunately, it’s a problem many of us face. Especially if you dye or bleach your hair often. I lighten my hair several times a year with highlights, and these are all problems I have to deal with. Fortunately, I’ve tried numerous products that help to soften and smooth my hair, making it look and feel much better. I love all of these products, so I can’t pick just one or two to use. I switch it up and use different products on different days. Sometimes I use more than one at once. Since these products have helped me, I thought I would share.

Uncommon Goods: Christmas Gift Ideas

Although I’m super excited for Fall activities and Halloween, I’ve already begun thinking about Christmas and brainstorming ideas of gifts that I might want to put on my Christmas list or to give to others. I generally like to do my shopping in October and November, before December even rolls around. I also prefer to do online shopping because it’s more convenient and you can find super cool items that you might not find in local stores.

I recently came across a site called Uncommon Goods, which has so many different cool items to choose from. Whether you are shopping for gifts for your mom, or trying to find something to buy for your dad (Guys always seem to be the hardest to buy for), this site definitely has something for everyone. One thing that I love about this brand is that they are cruelty free. They do not sell leather, feathered, or fur products. Another thing I love is that when you make a purchase, you get to select a non-profit organization to receive a $1 donation from them.

Below are just a few items that caught my eye.

Body Positivity & Skinny Shaming

I want to take a moment to talk about the body positive movement and skinny shaming, as these two things have seemed to go hand in hand within the last few years. Skinny shaming is nothing new. It’s something that I have actually experienced my whole life. I’ve been called anorexic (although I’ve never had an eating disorder), and I’m always getting comments about how skinny I am, such as, “You need to put some meat on those bones.” Any time I go to a gathering where there is food involved, I can be sure that someone is going to check out my plate and make some unnecessary comment about my weight. I never really thought much about these things growing up because models in magazines were of similar size, and being skinny was considered the more desirable body type. Therefore, any negative comments I received were just brushed to the side.

The body positive movement really gained a lot of momentum within the past few years. The purpose of the movement is to get society to be more accepting of all body types, and I really think it’s working. You now see people being more confident and flaunting what they’ve got instead of trying to hide behind clothing. Magazines are also starting to feature more people of different sizes, instead of just one size. I think this is all terrific. I’ve always admired different body types, and I don’t think one size is better than another. Sometimes I even find myself getting a little jealous of curvy women because I think they look amazing.
